At the begining ESA/ESRIN through the Earth Observation Application Department (EOAD) has committed the Earth Observation Quality Control (EOQC) service for managing the quality of data from Third Party Missions , especially from the well-known Landsat missions. A quality control loop has been implemented and a full quality system deployed.
With time and effort, our knowledge of optical missions has became broader. The list of new earth observation missions to be analyzed has became more and more important. The complexity has became serious; different system design, product format, processing system, target applications...
For a given mission, the intrinsic or absolute quality is considered. The relative quality should be also considered. Then, the missions should be as much as possible comparable.
How to organize, analyze and understand all these parameters? Yes it is... This is one of the scientific clues to fully use the remote sensing data.
The value added relies on the capability to compare heterogeneous data. How to compare? Day by day, the innovative design of GAEL software is provided the solution for abstraction above the mission, above the product. The processing chain becomes more and more inter-operable and the system design support us to apply a strengthen quality policy. The traceability of our measurement is the first concern.
The EOQC team is the beta user of one of the most promising technology, DRB/CORTEX. The EOQC technical skill is here to listen to customer needs, to analyze system and to prototype processing algorithm. The finality is the data verification, calibration and validation.
All this knowledge is reingest into RS thematic topics such geological and cartographic fields.
Several researches with international bodies (ETH, USGS, JAXA, ONERA, JRC...) demonstrates our capability to cooperate, coordinate and communicate.
